Never been sailing before on your holiday? Always looked with a touch of envy when you see people out in the water and wondered if you’d make a good sailor? Simply wondered how you go about being able to sail on holiday?
When you stay at Phokaia Beach Resort with us, you have the chance to get your sea legs in order and learn to sail with qualified instructors in one of the best places you can get to grips with sailing.
We are fortunate to have a resort in such a unique location, and when you try sailing with us, you’ll soon see what makes it so magical. For anyone completely new to sailing, you’ll have lucked into learning the sport in a great location.
Facing west towards the Mediterranean, Phokaia is a sailor’s paradise. Wind conditions are what you’d expect (mild in the morning, fun in the afternoon), and with the natural shelter provided from a large cove around us, it has just the right kind of breeze to make sailing a doddle.
Winds can get up around a five on the Beaufort scale later in the day, and that’s when confident sailors would be best to head out and see if they can pick up speed.
For many guests, this will be their first time sailing. We have some fantastic free lessons you can take advantage of as a Mark Warner holiday-goer.
Everyone can take part in the 3-hour Introduction to Sailing lesson. This is a comprehensive look at how to sail and will end with you taking to the water.
Our Refresher sailing lesson starts on land but quickly gets you back up to speed if you were looking to hire equipment or take a course.
The Improver sailing clinic runs throughout the week with five 1½ hour lessons that take you from learning the ropes to commanding them in a catamaran in no time at all.
RYA sailing courses are some of the best in the world and we’re delighted to offer them for guests at Phokaia Beach Resort. Whether it’s your first time getting in a sailboat, or you’ve had plenty of experience commanding a sail, there’s a course that will take you to that next level.
The main courses provided for adults fall into three levels:
-Start Sailing (Level 1) – Teaching the essentials and getting you ready to solo sai-
-Basic Skills (Level 2) – Seeing if you can launch yourself for a solo sail and learn some rigging skills
-Better Sailing (Level 3) – Improving your skills even more and giving a taste of what advanced modules could do for you
Adult courses are £70 per level and can be booked before you travel.
Children can have an amazing time and learn a unique life skill when they learn to sail on holiday.
There are RYA approved courses we run exclusively for children, along with sailing on the timetable for specific age groups enrolled in weekly childcare.
Courses run from aged 6 and above to 13 depending on skill level, with those aged 14 and over deemed suitable for adult courses. Kids will learn the fun of sailing, how to carry it out safely and gain extensive background knowledge.
Children’s sailing courses run for four days and cost £50 per child.
Taken to sailing like a duck to water and want to see just how much better you can get?
We have some tremendous RYA approved advanced modules for those who want to make the most of sailing in these fantastic waters. These modules cover how to confidently sail with spinnakers, familiarising yourself with team sailing and learning ways to navigate in adverse conditions.
These modules are £70 each and can be pre-booked before your travels.
Prefer to have a one on one lesson to improve your skills, or fancy doing a unique parent-child activity? It is possible to book in for private lessons with an instructor.
Solo lessons will give you uninterrupted access to an instructor for an hour at a time. This will help you become competent and iron out any kinks or bad habits you haven’t noticed.
Parent and child lessons are a great bonding session and one of those holiday activities that make for a lasting memory. An instructor will show you both the basics and work within your level before going on a sail together.
All private lessons need to be booked at the resort and paid locally.
Anyone staying in Phokaia is going to be very excited to know it’s one of our top resorts for watersports, thanks to its unique location and the access to the water right on our doorstep.
It’s quite common for some guests to spend most of their week down by the water, and who can blame them when they have the chance to do activities they don’t get the opportunity to do back home.
You can see the entire range of activities on our Phokaia watersports page.
