Why the Med beats a reservoir for your child's RYA sailing course
Every summer, thousands of parents book their children onto RYA sailing courses at local clubs and watersports centres across the UK. The instruction is great, the qualification is real; but let's be honest about the setting. Cold water. Grey skies. A reservoir in the Midlands, or a crowded coastal harbour in the height of school holidays.
What if your child could earn exactly the same RYA qualification - from the same scheme, delivered by the same calibre of instructor - while on a family holiday in the Mediterranean? Warm turquoise water. Reliable, gentle sea breezes. A sun-drenched bay in Greece or Turkey. And you, a glass of something cold in hand, watching them sail from the beach.
That's exactly what a Mark Warner sailing holiday looks like.
The same qualification. A very different experience.
Mark Warner's RYA-accredited resorts deliver the full National Sailing Scheme for young sailors aged 6 to 13; Stages 1 through 4, taught by qualified RYA instructors, in small groups, over four half-day sessions. They'll come home with their RYA certificate and logbook, ready to progress at their club back home.
The difference is everything around the course itself.
In the UK, your child is learning on a reservoir or tidal estuary; unpredictable, often chilly, and rarely something you'd choose to swim in. At a Mark Warner resort, they're sailing a sheltered Mediterranean bay with warm, clear water and a consistent breeze - conditions that are genuinely ideal for learning. Our Paleros resort on the Ionian coast, for example, offers a calm, landlocked-style bay with gentle, predictable winds: perfect for building confidence and getting the basics locked in.
It costs less than you think
Here's where it gets interesting for parents who already budget for RYA courses every summer.
A single RYA Youth Stage at Mark Warner is £65, pre-booked with your holiday. That covers four half-day sessions with a qualified instructor at an RYA-accredited centre in the Mediterranean.
For comparison, the same qualification at UK sailing clubs and watersports centres typically costs between £150 and £350; and that's before you factor in the travel to get there, the kit your child needs, and the rest of the week they'd rather be doing something else.
At Mark Warner, the sailing course is a small addition to a holiday that already includes flights and transfers, half-board dining (breakfast and dinner every day), and kids' clubs from 2 years. The course fee pays for the course. The rest of the experience comes with the holiday.
They'll actually want to go
This is the part that's hard to put a price on.
A UK sailing course is a commitment - early mornings, a drive across town or across the country, children who aren't always sure they want to be there. At Mark Warner, your child is on holiday. They're already excited. The waterfront is a two-minute walk from the beach where the rest of the family is spending the day. The instructors are warm, experienced, and brilliant with children of all abilities. By day three, most kids are asking if they can do an extra session.
Our RYA Youth Courses run across three resorts - Lemnos, Paleros and Phokaia - and cater for all abilities separately, from complete beginners in Stage 1 right through to confident young sailors working on Stage 4. Whichever stage your child is on, they'll be grouped with peers at the same level and taught at the right pace.
And when they're not sailing?
That's the other thing. In the UK, a sailing course is the activity. At Mark Warner, it's one of more than 20 included activities your family can enjoy during the week. Tennis with LTA-qualified coaches. Kayaking. Windsurfing. Stand-up paddleboarding. Evening races on the water. A friendly Big Race to close out the week.
For you, it's a proper holiday; with the reassurance that your child is doing something genuinely worthwhile with their time on the water, earning a qualification they'll use for years.
Ready to swap the reservoir for a bay in Greece?
Courses are available at Lemnos, Paleros and Phokaia and can be pre-booked when you complete your Mark Warner holiday booking. We recommend booking early; courses are popular, especially during peak summer weeks.
