Originally from West Sussex, Torie Lear has been working for Mark Warner since 2013 and has been a Sales Team Leader since February 2015. We asked her about her life in the travel industry.
Hi Torie, how did you make your way to the job of Sales Team Leader at Mark Warner? What’s your educational and career background?
I studied International Hospitality Management at Oxford Brookes University, during which I spent a year working for a tour operator in both Spain and Italy. I worked in a customer-facing role in a few hotels, which I loved.
I then did a second ski season after university, and that’s when I decided I definitely wanted to carry on working in the travel industry. I had a bit of sales experience so decided to combine this with my love for travel. Although I didn’t work for Mark Warner in any of my seasons, I knew several people who had worked for them and rated them very highly, so they were an obvious choice when I started my search.
What originally attracted you to working in the travel industry?
I love to ski and travel, and wanted to work in a role where I can combine both.
Is there a typical day in your job, and if so, what is it? Or is every day different?
We spend all day talking to customers on the phone and booking their holidays, and then we go on resort trips a couple of times a year to see the destinations we’re selling.
What are common questions that customers ask you about Mark Warner holidays?
With ski holidays, we’re asked a lot about the location of our properties. All our chalet hotels are in great locations close to the lifts. Also, as we get a great deal of solo travellers on our ski holidays, we have lots of enquiries about where we offer single rooms (the answer is: Val d’Isère and Les Deux Alpes). Many customers want to know how long the transfers are to the ski resorts – the shortest are to St Anton and Les Deux Alpes.
For summer holidays, with watersports being one of the most popular aspects of Mark Warner resorts, we get lots of questions about wind conditions, types of boats, and the tuition available. We also get customers who are interested in the other activities we offer, such as mountain-biking, tennis and fitness classes. We’ve recently started selling intensive cycling and yoga weeks so have had lots of questions about what they entail.
Lastly, with childcare an important factor for many visitors, we get lots of questions about club times, activities included, and evening childcare.
Which resorts have you been to, and which is your favourite?
Lemnos is definitely my favourite beach resort – the accommodation is lovely and the staff are really friendly, and it definitely has the best sunsets of all the resorts.
The Chalet hotel Rosanna in St Anton is my favourite ski property. I love the great location in the centre of town, close to the lifts – and the après! The food is really good and there’s plenty of complimentary wine – much needed after a long day of skiing…
Where do you like to travel when you’re not working?
I love to ski so try to go at least once a year. This year I’m off to Val d’Isère and St Anton.
What do you like most about working for Mark Warner?
Speaking to lots of different people each day, and the friendly working environment.
